Decemberchild Concert Benefiting Children’s Hospice & Palliative Care Coalition Slated for Saturday, December 10th At Kuumbwa Jazz Center
Featuring Musical Talents of Superior Olive and
David & Linda LaFlamme of
It’s a Beautiful Day
The 9
th annual Decemberchild Benefit Concert returns to Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz on Saturday December 10th at 7 pm. Proceeds benefit Children’s Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition (CHPCC). The lineup features pop rock from Superior Olive plus special guests David and Linda LaFlamme of classic bay area rockers It’s A Beautiful Day. Doors open at 7pm to a birthday party atmosphere with complementary finger foods; birthday cake will be served; and a silent auction will be held for the chance to bid and win great prizes. Children are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Tickets are $20.00 and are available at Offshore Music, located at 926 Soquel Ave. in Santa Cruz; also on-line at www.stillfumin.com.The inspiration for the Decemberchild celebration began with Tom Savell’s own experience as a child. His birthday within a week of Christmas, Tom recalls, "I remember one year getting no birthday party/cake, and "combination" Christmas/birthday gifts. I wanted my birthday to be as far away from Christmas as possible." After discovering how many others share his experience, Tom and his brothers created Decemberchild as a birthday party for all whose special days are overshadowed by the holidays. But for Tom and his brothers, the true reward is giving to others even less fortunate. "We want to do something for kids who have more worries than having a birthday near Christmas."
Founded in 2001, Children’s Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition is leading the way to bring about lasting, fundamental change in California’s treatment of seriously ill children and their families by addressing gaps in services at the state and local levels. Statewide, CHPCC’s efforts are improving children’s access to compassionate, family-centered care at home. Locally, CHPCC is providing children in the tri-county area with safe, reliable transportation to medical treatment; last year alone CHPCC clocked more than 60,000 miles and over 400 roundtrips. The Decemberchild Benefit Concert together with Superior Olive hopes to provide support for CHPCC to continue this caring work of love and compassion.
The crowd pleasing pop rock band Superior Olive has been wowing audiences up and down the West Coast, building a following that reaches from the Pacific Northwest down to San Diego, and selling CDs around the world from Japan to Austria. Combining danceable pop and progressive rock, Superior Olive draws in audiences of all ages with their unique blend of modern and classical influences reminiscent of The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Rush, Genesis, and Tchaikovsky. The band is fronted by nationally acclaimed New Artist of the Year 2008 Tom Savell, known for his emotional vocals and mid-song changes from rocking guitar to soaring violin solos.
Virtuoso violinist and front man David LaFlamme along with his wife Linda LaFlamme form the core of It’s A Beautiful Day, best known for their classic hit single "White Bird." It's A Beautiful Day, whose self-titled debut album was laced with favorites like "Hot Summer Day," "Girl With No Eyes," and "White Bird," was one of the earliest and most important San Francisco bands to emerge from the 1967 Summer of Love, headlining at the Fillmore West before recording their first album.
Performing together on stage, audiences have always been delighted with dual violin solos by Tom Savell and David LaFlamme. With the planned lineup this year, there will be even more opportunity for interesting and spontaneous violin interplay to thrill the party-goers.

Virtuoso violinist and front man David LaFlamme provides the unique signature sound on their self-titled 1968 debut LP “It's A Beautiful Day,” which was laced with favorites like “Bombay Calling,” “Girl With No Eyes,” and the aforementioned “White Bird.”

Featuring nationally acclaimed New Artist of the Year 2008 Tom Savell, Superior Olive plays a spectrum of music that combines danceable pop rock with progressive influences, blending melodic arrangements with raw primal rock energy. An accomplished violinist since age 10, Tom is known for emotional vocals and mid-song changes from rocking guitar to soaring violin solos. Based on prior years’ performances, audiences can expect dual electric violin solos with both Tom Savell and David LaFlamme at the show.

Benefiting The Valley Christmas Project of Valley Churches United Missions
The annual Decemberchild Benefit Concert is coming to Don Quixote’s International Music Hall in Felton on Sunday December 13th at 7PM. Proceeds benefit the Valley Christmas Project of Valley Churches United Missions, which provides a better holiday for thousands of people each year throughout Santa Cruz County. Raffle prizes include a Creative Vado Pocket Video Camera and an Epiphone G-400 Electric Guitar with hard case (MSRP $738). Children under 21 are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent.
It's A Beautiful Day along with Santana are considered to be "2nd wave" bands that emerged from the San Francisco bay area in the late sixties. Moreover, like Santana, IABD headlined at the Fillmore West prior to recording an album. Their debut 1968 LP the self titled "It's A Beautiful Day" was laced with classic cuts such as "White Bird", "Bombay Calling", "Wasted Union Blues" and "Time Is" The single off the LP..."White Bird" quickly became part of the FM play lists and is considered a classic of rock music.
Superior Olive featuring nationally acclaimed New Artist of the Year 2008 Tom Savell once again plays the Annual Decemberchild Benefit Concert. This award winning group of international touring musicians and recording artists has been wowing audiences throughout the West Coast. With 3 previously released CDs combining danceable pop rock with progressive influences, Superior Olive plays a spectrum of music influenced by Pink Floyd, Genesis, and Frank Zappa. An accomplished violinist as well, Tom Savell is set to perform electrifying dual violin solos along with It’s A Beautiful Day front man David LaFlamme at the show.
Also, the band Sweet Jam showcases an acoustic blend of soft rock, jazz, and Celtic-styled original music on their 2009 debut CD “We Are One”. The group builds on an acoustic guitar / electric bass foundation, adds the soft flowing vocals and earthy flute / recorder sounds of Catherine Lewis, and features renowned multi-instrumentalist Keith Graves (Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jerry Miller, Jefferson Starship) on drums and percussion.
The inspiration for the Decemberchild celebration began with Tom Savell’s own experience as a child. But for Tom, the true reward is giving to others even less fortunate. “I want to do something for kids that don’t get anything for Christmas or birthday.”
The Valley Churches United Missions is not a church, nor is it affiliated with any single church. It is a coalition of community and church volunteers coming together to perform humanitarian acts by providing direct aid assistance in the form of food and shelter to San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley residents in their time of crisis. Last year’s Valley Christmas Project reached out to 5,210 people countywide, providing the spirit of Christmas through this "Mission of Love" in the form of Christmas presents and healthy meals to those in need.
