Joel's Graduation continued from page 1

That same night, we removed most of the paintings except for the largest ones. The next day, we returned to retrieve the rest of the paintings. While there, a girl approached Joel. She pointed out a sign indicating that a lost guitar had been found. The sign was right next to where we parked the trucks we were loading equipment into the night before. After hearing it from Joel, Tom immediately called the number but only got an answering machine. The missing guitar was Tom's 7-string Schecter he got last Christmas. After finishing loading the artwork into the van, Joel left to walk to his graduation ceremony, and Tom drove the van home to pick up the family and bring them back to the ceremony. After returning home from a celebration dinner, Tom had a message on his answering machine from the guy who had found his guitar.

The guy, Kenny Meehan, said that he would be gone for the evening, but Tom should call and say when he could pick up the guitar, because he was leaving college the day after tomorrow. Tom started calling the guy at 9AM the next morning since there were plans to take the family to Monterey. He called pretty much every 5 minutes until 11AM when he told the family to leave without him.

At one point, Tom even called the campus police department to see what to do. They said they could send over officers to pick up the guitar since the office would be closed over the weekend.

A couple of days later, Tom was talking to a newspaper reporter that related to the situation. The reporter had apparently found a wallet stuffed with cash and credit cards while working in Fresno. He recognized the name as a relative of a prominent Fresno businessman and called the businessman to report that he had found the wallet. Later, a couple of policeman arrived and handcuffed the reporter. It seems the businessman repaid his honesty by telling the cops he had stolen the wallet! The reporter's story checked out and no charges were filed, but man, what an ordeal for being a nice guy!

Anyway, back to the story. The family went to breakfast and, to Tom's surprise, they came back. Tom's dad had the idea to look up the student's name at the school web-site, even though they didn't know the spelling of Kenny's last name (Tom originally thought it was "Means"). But Joel decided to call Kenny one more time and, to everyone's delight, he answered the phone.
